FAMILY CAMPING
Practical tips for more closeness, lightness and real moments in nature.
"When out with the family - your gear is the last thing you want to be occupied with"
"GEAR DOESN'T MATTER - UNTIL IT DOES"
When you're out and about with the family, you don't want to bother with equipment. You want to be in the moment - watching your children explore the surroundings, cooking together and listening to the sounds of nature.
What you don't want is to already lose your mind setting up camp.
That's why equipment that simply works - reliable, intuitive, uncomplicated - is absolutely crucial. The simpler the set-up, the more room there is for what really counts: Connection, adventure and the quiet joy of spending time outdoors together.
WHAT THE TEAM SAYS
We asked the members of our team what their best tips for family camping are and would like to share them with you below.
01 Keep it Simple
For children, everything outside is an adventure - every stick is a sword, every stone a treasure. You don't need a huge arsenal. A few well thought-out essentials are enough: a warm sleeping bag, a reliable lamp, simple cooking utensils.
The less you take with you, the more room there is for spontaneity and discovery.
Don't forget: check the lowest night-time temperatures in advance - even in summer it can get very cold at night, especially in the mountains or near bodies of water.
And: avoid 100% cotton - whether clothing or bedding. Your favorite bedding from home may seem cozy, but in the great outdoors it can have the opposite effect. Cotton retains moisture, takes forever to dry and feels clammy. Instead, opt for quick-drying, breathable materials - either blended fabrics or fully synthetic - for a better night's sleep and a comfortable body feeling. Our COOLEVER™ clothing is a good place to start.
02 Choose the 'right' tent
A tent is more than just protection - it is your temporary home. Comfort, flexibility and ease of use are particularly important here.
Of course, now is the point where we tell you why Heimplanet-tents are ideal here. Sure - no fiddling with individual parts, set up in under a minute (even when the kids are setting up), easily withstands 60 mph wind - sounds nice. But only you can decide what really suits your family.
Important: A family-friendly tent does not necessarily have to bring everyone under one roof. For younger children, a large tent in which everyone sleeps together can create a sense of security. But the older they get, the more exciting it becomes to divide the camp into several small tents. This encourages independence, provides space and brings a little adventure into play. A common area under a tarp becomes the heart of the camp - a place to cook, be together and relax.
A small but tried and tested tip: choose your pitch carefully - elevated positions prevent water from pooling in the rain.
And: To avoid tripping hazards, place stones or pieces of wood at the ends of the guy ropes. With Heimplanet-tents, you don't usually need these at all - they are bombproof with just four pegs. Additional lines are intended for extreme conditions.
03 Involve the kids: Own luggage, own responsibility
Seems risky at first [hear us out]
Camping is not just an adventure for the little ones - it's also a chance to give them confidence and get them actively involved. If they are old enough, let them draw up their own packing list. This gets them thinking about the adventure in advance, makes them curious and shows them that they can take responsibility for themselves and for the shared experience.
Make a game out of it: Who can pack the lightest or most compact rucksack without sacrificing the essentials? It's best to try this out a few days before the trip - as a little dress rehearsal. Not only will the children learn what is really important, but they will also feel that they are an important part of the team.
This kind of independence strengthens their self-confidence - and makes them active companions, not just fellow travelers.
04 Space for real moments - not for equipment
The most beautiful memories often arise between plans - in the stillness of the morning, in the golden light of the evening, while wandering aimlessly through nature. Consciously leave space for these in-between moments. Let the children explore freely, let stories emerge on their own - without time pressure, without an agenda.
Equipment that fades into the background helps here. A tent that almost pitches itself. A stove that works reliably. A light that switches on exactly when you need it. When your equipment works smoothly, your head remains free - for what really counts: Closeness, presence, connection.
Good equipment is unobtrusive. It works - and leaves the moment to you.
